Born and raised in Oslo, Norway, this remarkable distance runner was restricted to competing in just the 1,500 meters race in the 1976 Olympic Games, as women were not allowed to compete at longer distances. Undeterred, Grete Waitz kept at her craft, and by 1978, she was invited to compete in the New York Marathon, and became a record-setting sensation. Finally, in 1984 at the Los Angeles Olympic Games, Grete's dream was realized - the women's marathon was added to the competition, and the 30-year-old Waitz had her chance at long-distance gold. Despite being edged out by American runner Joan Benoit, Grete's silver medal will always be remembered as a part of sporting history.
