After 36 years at uninspiring Jack Murphy Stadium (aka Qualcomm Stadium), the Padres have a true baseball home - Petco Park, another absolute gem in the new generation of retro-style baseball-only stadiums. A packed house of 41,400 has settled in and as hometown star David Wells unleashes his first pitch with the Padres, and the historic first pitch at the new park - SNAP! The moment is preserved for all-time, and is now avaialble for your wall!
Like all prints in photographer Rob Arra's Everlasting Images series, every single detail is in perfect focus, and as you pan across the image you feel like you are actually there, part of that historic day at a ballpark that has become an instant classic. Along with Wells' first pitch on its way towards San Francisco Giants leadoff batter Ray Durham, you can see the rest of the players on the field (on-deck batter Neifi Perez, catcher Ramon Hernandez, infielders Phil Nevin, Mark Loretta, Khalil Greene and Sean Burroughs; and outfielders Brian Giles, Jay Payton and Ryan Klesko); the magnificent scoreboard tower in left; the San Diego skyline beyond the left-center gap; the amazing old-style iron roof and light towers; the fans in the stands; and, of course, the old Western Metal Supply Co. warehouse in the corner. With a dramatic 10-inning victory to cap off the evening, the karma seems good for this long-delayed but well-worth-the-wait ballpark.
